The GSMA Council is made up of volunteer members who are elected by their peers to represent their regions and help strengthen the association.
Working alongside the Executive Director and Team GSM, Council members share member feedback, contribute ideas, support initiatives, and help create opportunities for government communicators to learn, connect, and grow throughout the year.

Nomination deadline: Friday, Aug. 14 @5pm PT
Voting: Monday, Aug. 17 - Wednesday, Aug. 26
Regions: Northwest, Midwest, Northeast
Candidates should review the latest edition of the Membership Guidebook, which includes information about Council elections and service.
To be eligible to run, nominees must have maintained GSMA membership for at least one cumulative year during the three years preceding the election.
The following regions are electing representatives to serve two-year terms:
Regions up for election in this cycle for 2-year terms are:
Northwest: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming
Midwest: Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin
Northeast: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia
Council members help strengthen GSMA by:
Representing the perspectives of members in their region
Sharing ideas and feedback that help improve the association
Participating in committees and special projects
Supporting member engagement, networking, and professional development opportunities
Serving as ambassadors for GSMA and the government communications profession
You don't need to have served on a board before or decades of experience to make a difference.
We're looking for members who:
Are passionate about government communications
Enjoy working collaboratively
Want to support and encourage fellow members
Are willing to volunteer their time throughout their term
Want to help strengthen the GSMA community

Complimentary registration to GSMCON while serving on the Council. GSMA also provides reimbursement for select travel expenses.
Opportunities to build relationships with government communicators from across North America.
Professional leadership and volunteer experience within a growing association.
Council members play an active role in supporting the association throughout their term. In addition to serving as an active representative for their region, providing recommendations to strengthen GSMA, and championing approved initiatives, Council members are expected to:
Participate in monthly Council meetings, scheduled leadership discussions, and monthly committee meetings.
Lead the virtual Member Meetups and support or co-host other association webinars.
Co-chair at least one GSMA committee and actively support committee initiatives.
Assist with volunteer support at the annual Government Social Media Conference (GSMCON), including set up and tear down.
Follow the GSMA Membership Guidebook and Council Code of Conduct.
